At Shiadu we believe that anyone can, through their actions or attitudes, contribute to improve the social condition of those who need the most, reason why the social causes involve all employees. In this perspective, Shiadu founded a non-profit association in 2013: Happier Lives.
Happier Lives is a non-profit association within the scope of Shiadu’s corporate social responsibility and was established for the purpose of developing two projects: Happier Children and Happier Teens.
The first project launched by our association was the “Happier Children” Project. It´s a project that aims to promote and support children in the Education area. We want to teach our children not only how to count, but also to count on what matters the most!
The Happier Children Project started in São Tomé and Príncipe and in Portugal.
The main goals of this project are:
• To offer support in terms of basic school material;
• To support teachers’ training and specialization;
• To encourage and create conditions for more schools to gain access to computers with internet connection;
• To foster the partnership between primary schools in São Tomé and Príncipe and in Portugal, allowing exchange of experiences.
At Happier Children we believe that all children must benefit from good quality education and that learning reflects into their communities as well as throughout their lives.
According to Irina Bokova, the former Director-General of UNESCO, “education entails sustainability in all development objectives, and literacy is the basis of all learning. It provides all individuals with the capacity to comprehend and shape the world, participating into democratic processes and having a voice, strengthening their cultural identity”.
This was the context upon which the Happier Children Association developed and achieved several donations of school material in a primary school in São Tomé. Thanks to the volunteer’s presence, school conditions were improved through the construction of a library and the delivery of training and awareness-raising activities on the importance of education for children. In addition, a child sponsorship program was developed between Portuguese and French citizens.
Our second project is called Happier Teens and it seeks to support young members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) population who live in situations of family exclusion.
Many adolescents experience situations of social exclusion due to their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. Happier Teens’ mission is to provide these young adults conditions for their required physical and emotional security by exposing them to methods for reinforcing their resilience and social, educational, academic or professional integration, in view of their safe empowerment.
The Happier Teens project seeks to support the young LGBT population through the creation of a “support network” on different levels, namely: temporary and emergency hosting, case monitoring, social support, access to medical care, psychological support, educational or academic support, support towards family integration and support towards professional integration.
