A hotel with a history…
Even before you reach number 17 of Rua de Santa Catarina, you can notice the history and beauty of the surrounding area: a genuine Lisbon architecture, views of the Rio Tejo (Tagus River), a statue that takes us back to the time of the Portuguese discoveries and a viewpoint from where one used to spot the ships that had arrived from India at the height of the Portuguese maritime expansion.
According to tradition, the viewpoint of Santa Catarina, once termed as Monte do Pico e do Belveder, was a retreat for observers who admired the movement of ships between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries, and hence the popular colloquium “See ships in Alto de Santa Catarina”. Legend has it that it was in this place that the French soldiers saw the Portuguese royal family flee to Brazil.
The Alto de Santa Catarina is thus considered one of the most beautiful and emblematic places in Lisbon, located a short distance from Chiado and Bairro Alto but with a tranquility that surprises those who pass by.
The Monte Belvedere Boutique Hotel by Shiadu building is part of the history of the Alto de Santa Catarina: built in the 20’s, for years it housed a French family and their perfume factory, subsequently sold in the family’s store in Chiado. Throughout the years, the factory that was located in the basement closed and the building was used exclusively as this family’s housing until the year of 2011.
It was Shiadu’s mission to rehabilitate the building, maintaining its architectural traces and decorative details in its interior, such as the wooden stairs, original windows, some utensils of the old factory and of course, the terrace of 170m2! Since the summer of 2012, Shiadu marks its presence in one of the most reputable viewpoints of Lisbon, with 12 double and family rooms, stunning views of the Rio Tejo, and a meeting room and a restaurant in the terrace that opens every day from 12h00 to 00h00: the Madame Petisca Restaurante, Bar e Terraço.
Follow your instinct, the best view of Lisbon awaits you…
